The American Road
Tomorrow’s Education Network has partnered with Songmasters LLC to develop and deliver Songmasters’ collaboratively-conceived music-driven history and civics education initiative.
The American Road is a music-driven education, community civic engagement, and multimedia initiative grounded in a comprehensive history and civic curriculum for secondary students. It will introduce youth in their formative years to history’s challenges, to the gift and responsibility of being the heirs of our democracy, and to constructive ways to address today’s real-world needs.
The American Road uses the power of music to drive a robust program exploring modern US history and civics. The American Road uses hundreds of historically important American songs – in original versions and through more than 50 contemporary covers re-cast and re-imagined by some of today’s biggest recording artists – and ties these to a robust curriculum crossing seven eras (from 1890 to the present) and seven themes that capture the spiral of history in this period. We use the voices of every generation – including this one – to give voice in their own songs to our shared history and humanity,
Our aim is to actively engage secondary students across the country in music-driven explorations of modern American history and civics in an interdisciplinary framework using primary source material from the Library of Congress and other similar institutions.
The American Road has a bold and agile technology platform – The Tapestry – to make the comprehensive curriculum easily accessible at little or no cost – including curriculum maps, lessons plans, recordings, new digital resources and activities, and an extensive database of primary source materials linked to their original sources.
The American Road also has a community civic engagement program, delivered in partnership with national volunteer match organizations, to involve students in action that will promote an ethos of service and benefit their local communities. And we have a strong media and entertainment platform to amplify the program’s reach and impact through events and original programming that will attract the full spectrum of our nation’s youth.
Together, these elements bring to life the compelling story of our imperfect journey as a people, how our journey has created the nation we are today, and sets our future path toward a more perfect union.
